HAUNTED HOUSE REVIEW: SCREAMWORLD (Houston, Texas, USA)

SCREAMWORLD- located on Sam Houston Beltway in North Houston, TX.
This year I attended annonymously with a friend who's birthday is on Halloween. We wanted to celebrate by doing something fun and scary.
Been there done that with watching horror flicks, made my own horror flick, and now am craving the live theatrical experience in my entertainment... so we decided on the time honored tradition of the Haunted House attraction.

As a veteran of Halloween and Haunt industry, I have many mass market halloween products with world wide distribution (REEL FX via Rubies Costume Co.), and was co-owner of a successful Theme Haunt back in 1997 (VAMPYRE HOUSE). Along with the Fiendish Dr. Phil, and our FX lab, Facades FX we have provided many prosthetics, masks and SFX rigs for Haunts around the world including Netherworld in Atlanta, and of course Screamworld itself. In 2003 we were contracted to do makeup and stalk arounds for Screamworld, and that was the last time I was there, before this past Saturday. And I have to say with resounding enthusiasm: WOW! It has really changed!!!

The haunt has grown, and the appointments have greatly improved with the newer technologies that have over the past decade revolutionized the haunt industry. As a professional I'll give my evaluation first, then lastly as a lover of all things Horror and Halloween.

Facility: Well organized and clean.

Parking: With a fee, but nicely organized, and easy access both arriving and exiting.

Ticket Prices: Within reason, and over all worth what you pay.

Decor, props and sets/dressing: Nicely done environments. More detailed, and I can see where they put the money in the sets, props and detailing. A lot of growth and improvement over the years.

Waiting time: Now this was a stroke of genius. The Monster Maze is an additional attraction included in the ticket price, but, it is routed at the entrance and patrons go through it *before* entering the line for the actual interior haunt. This was a fang-tastic warm up scream fest! Nicely done maze, with chain link fences and post beams, and plenty of creepy creatures stalking the corners and frightening patrons. A few DEAD ENDS where stalkers could corner the fearful for a heart pounding fright. I loved it.

Actual Line: Two options: Wait or Speed Pass (an additional fee). I'm being frugal, so I opted to wait, and I am glad I did. It was a great chance for me to watch the crowd, and experience the stalk around actors. Simple noise makers hidden in the palm of the actors offered up great startles to unsuspecting patrons who had been lulled by the wait in the line, or distracted by the video monitor showing "SAW." This put the Fun back in funeral.

The Haunt itself- without giving too many spoilers, it was dark, narrow, scary, without being too dark, so you didn't miss anything. Great props suspended from the ceiling swinging bodies, butchered hogs, you name it. Great industrial scare tools, oil drums used to bang on, and of course the classic chain saw. Why they even had a zombie world which you exited into as the climax of the haunt. FANGTASTIC! One thing I found to be so affective: Strobe lights... so anyone with a medical condition beware! They had a great disorienting affect and were used throughout the haunt! SINcerely Scary!

Makeup & Costumes: MUCH BETTER than in previous years. Use of prosthetics was pretty good, application was more than adequite for the haunt industry standard, and it was over all pretty cool.

Actors: VERY GOOD! the vets were easy to pick out as they had the scare ambush tactics down to a science. A couple that stood out were a zombie woman with a walker in a hospital environment....EXCELLENT use of the prop as a scare tool! CREEPY!!! And in the butcher shed, with the swinging hog carcasses, one of the butcher boys who coralled the highschool girl's soccer team that was in my group into a corner for the maximum BANG of the scare... SCREAM-PALOOZA! Nicely done!

Most all of the characters in the Haunt were interesting and very much in character... nicely done one and all.

As a fan: I found myself losing my professional pov of analyzing the haunt withint a few moments of being inside, and just experienceing the thrills. And for a haunt that can do that to me, and make me scream like a teenage girl:
I give it a score of:
9 SCREAMS out of 10!HAPPY HAUNTING SCREAMWORLD!

GRUESOME HERTZOGG .. The Voice of Horror!

I'd like all of my fiends to meet a fellow ghoulish personality:
Podcast Interviewer and Reviewer Scott Geiter aka "GRUESOME HERTZOGG" shares his news, reviews and interviews with the world weekly. He is also a voice actor and sponsor for "Creepy Features: Rotten Zombies" and a commentary voice narrator.. He is the voice of Horror.

REVIEWER:
Scott began a career in podcasting in February, 2010 reviewing single shot horror movie reviews. He now has over 17,000 listeners, "Uncle Grue" has quite the fiend following!
In reviewing a movie, Gruesome takes into consideration the overall budget of the project and on the fly whatever comes to his head while viewing it. His review style is laid back, and honest.

On a rating system of 5-10, he will not publically review a movie that rates in his view under 5; stating that just because he doesn't like the movie, doesn't mean that someone else won't. Objectivity is important.  "My aspect of reviewing, " says Geiter, "is to share what movies I like and want others to check out."
In many cases his reviews have brought unknown movies into people's homes, and brought movies to the attention of film festivals and distributors.

INTERVIEWER:

His success at reviewing led to doing interviews with the independent film industry celebrities & personalities.
Among his favorite interviews are:  Toby Sells, Phil Nichols(aka The Fiendish Dr. Phil), Sybil Danning, Lisa Wilcox, Bill Olberst, Jr. and Jack Harrison (his first interview)

SPOOKS ENDORSEMENTS:

Recently, Gruesome has endorsed "ROTTEN ZOMBIES", a line of professional grade foam latex prosthetics by Facades FX lab (we know those guys!) and has lended his signature voice to promoting the line. He will also be featured as the narrator for the instructional DVD coming out this summer.

Gruesome is available to lend his voice to promote any horror/haunt event, and may be contacted for serious inquiries.
What's next for the rising vocal celebrity? He has a special Podcast show coming up which will be announced very soon, so tune in and turn on the terror!

MEET THE "LATE" DR. LADY...

I'd like to introduce a Haunt & Horror colleague of mine, who has made his mark on the Horror/Haunt/Mask industry in so many ways... Meet:

"The Late" Dr. David Lady has earned a reputation as a Master Artist in the Halloween and horror industry.   Beginning in the early 1980s, Lady has amassed credentials in a range of complementary yet diverse talents.

His experience and expertise span six areas:
He is also currently employed as Mayor of the town of Chatfield, Ohio.  Lady resides in Chatfield with his wife Laura
Their annual haunted attraction, the award-winning Horror Hotel museum tour, also serves as home to the Ladys and their “family” --a growing collection of monsters, ghosts, aliens and zombies.

David insists that he has been dead since 1997 and remains convinced that it’s his destiny either to save the world or to destroy it (he hasn’t been able to determine which yet).
---------
THE LATE DR. LADY SHOW

CAST:
David Lady………..himself
John “Wolfie” Hamrick………Wolfie
Laura Lady………..herself
Kellie Hamilton………Ilean

First went on the air in north central Ohio in October of 2003.
Each 2-hour episode features a horror or sci-fi movie plus approximately 30 minutes of DR LADY’s hosting segments and comedy skits shown at the breaks.

The setting is Horror Hotel, a hotel for monsters owned and operated by DR LADY (a frustrated would-be mad scientist who is apparently some undefined type of revenant), his wife Laura (a vampire) and their assistants Wolfie the bumbling werewolf handyman and Ilean the (possibly human) maid.

He always serves up a healthy helping of  cinematic trivia about the evening’s feature (sometimes showing viewers a mask or prop from the film) and the remaining skits and bits are typically a free-wheeling rapid-fire collection of jokes and blackouts, mock TV series and commercials, and spoofs of popular horror and sci-fi movies and themes.

The series is taped at the Ladys’ home, an actual 150-year-old former railroad hotel which they also open to the public for guided tours weekends in October each year.

Horror Hotel the attraction features all-new scenes and themes each year, and is considerably less silly than on the TV show. Similar to traditional horror host shows in format, the show is unusual in that the host and hostess are basically playing slightly exaggerated versions of themselves as opposed to out-and-out character portrayals and that much of what is depicted is at least loosely based on some genuine aspect of the cast’s oddball lives. Suffice to say, trying to separate fantasy from reality in this series can be a challenge.
-------
HORROR HOTEL

A Halloween enthusiast’s itinerary would be incomplete without a stop at HORROR HOTEL for a tour of what has to be the nation’s most unique and original Halloween attraction.
Rumored to be built upon the portal between the world of human beings and the great beyond, HORROR HOTEL provides accommodations for all the ghosts and monsters who materialize each Halloween season for their annual trip to haunt the land of the living.

Winner of several national haunt awards and voted one of the country’s top 13 haunted attractions in online polls, this cross between a haunted house and a classical wax museum comes to life each October inside its creators’ home (!), a 150-year-old hotel in central Ohio.

Every year, the husband-&-wife team of former Hollywood FX artists David and Laura Lady turn their already bizarre home into a haven for strange and deadly creatures of every kind.
They offer guided tours to curious human visitors, who are shown through the hotel’s lobby, dining hall, library, laboratory and various guest rooms occupied by various odd and inhuman beings.

The emphasis is on the all-encompassing fantasy-horror theme, bombarding guests with a sensory overload of menacing, unsettlingly realistic life-size monster figures and a level of set detail that is unsurpassed in the industry.

First-time visitors often find that they need to go through the horrific halls of the hotel more than once just to take in all its freaky sights and sounds.

Promoted as being suitable for all ages, HH rejects the usual haunt scenes of blood-drenched victims in favor of a morbid sense of graveyard humor, preferring to use its ever-changing cast of ghastly ghouls to entertain rather than simply to shock.

Drawing more out-of-state traffic each year thanks to its growing reputation as a must-see event for horror fans and Halloween buffs, the hotel is an easy destination even for spooks with no sense of direction.

It’s conveniently located on State Route 4 in the village of Chatfield, 45 minutes south of Sandusky (home to Cedar Point Amusement Park) and 75 minutes north of Columbus.
The hotel is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings in October. Admission price and exact dates sometimes fluctuate from year to year, so interested parties are encouraged to check for the gory details before loading up the family hearse and making the trek to Chatfield.

Write to David and Laura Lady,
c/o Horror Hotel, 6977 State Route 4,
P.O. Box #8, Chatfield, OH 44825
or email them at thedavidlady@hotmail.com

They’ll leave a light off for you!
Laura & David Lady

Mehron Makeup News: The Fiendish Dr.Phil Nichols

Mehron Makeup News: The Fiendish Dr.Phil Nichols

THE FIENDISH DR. PHIL

If there was ever a single person who changed the face of Halloween, Haunts and Horror Indie Film, it has to be the "Fiendish Dr." Phil Nichols.  He is known in many circles from his 25 year long career as a professional SFX Make-up artist, to Mask Collectors to Haunted Attractions to Independent Horror Films, for his creativity artistry and innovation.

A world-class artist, writer, producer, director, SFX artist, designer and classically trained actor.  This Fiendish Dr. who only makes haunted house calls, really can do it all!

MASKS & BUSTS

Pictured with HAMMER HORROR star Shane Bryant, The Fiendish Dr.
poses with two of his collector bust sculpts.
Dr. Phil is a world famous sculptor of likeness busts and masks, and was one of the most prolific artists in that circle from 1996 -2007. He is in the company of such famous mask personalities as Henry Alvarez and Dr. David Lady.
While traveling in the UK to premiere his first indie horror feature production, he visited the HAMMER HORROR museum collection which was on display at the film festival in Whitby, England.
There in a class case were two of his creations, and everyone was excited to meet the world-famous Fiendish Dr. Phil. Wherever he goes, he makes a big bloody splash!

HALLOWEEN PRODUCTS:

The hugely successful Latex Prosthetics and Make-up line sold through Rubies Costume Co. world wide, has been a Halloween staple for over a decade. The Fiendish Dr. Phil was the first SFX artist to ever introduce complete character prosthetics kits in addition to the usual noses, ears, horns, and wounds. Look for the orange package at your local costume/ Halloween retailer and keep it REEL this Halloween!

New Products for 2011:

Just in time for Halloween, this year The Fiendish Dr. Phil has done it again! Releasing his Hollywood quality foam latex line, Creepy Features; Dr. Phil is focusing the first style in the line entirely on those lurching, brain-hungry living dead fiends: ZOMBIES! This summer "ROTTEN ZOMBIES" outbreak begins! Available for direct sales or wholesale inquiries from the Creepy Features online store. So Run! Don't Walk... to www.creepyfeatures.com!

HAUNTS:

As a Fiendish Dr. who only makes haunted house calls, who knows haunts better than Dr. Phil?  In 1997 Dr. Phil created and designed a haunt that was well ahead of its time. A haunt based in the vampires of literature, drawing on folklore and legend, and the famous fiendish vampires of literature, VAMPYRE HOUSE was born!  For a first year haunt, it was a big success, and received a lot of local acclaim. The Haunt drew the attention of the local media and Dr. Phil appeared on many news segments and was the subject of a glowing write up in "INSIDE HOUSTON" magazine.
That year was the 100th anniversary of the publication of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, and the 75th anniversary of the premiere of the F. W. Mirnau silent film Nosferatu. One of the first haunts in the southwest to utilize Hollywood standard high production value, and SFX make-up, costumes, sets to create a living environment of terror.

And in 2013... Vampyre House will rise again... a re imagining for a new century, with a lot more teeth!

INDIE HORROR:

In 2010 The Fiendish Dr. Phil began shooting a new kind of vampire movie. A love letter to the old school vampire and Dracula fans who grew up with the old style lore and lots of blood and fangs... for the generation that predates the Twilight Saga, and really has Bite!  A re imagining of and a sequel to Bram Stoker's horrific tale of Dracula, this script would focus around the character of Renfield and tell the tale through his eyes. RENFIELD: THE UNDEAD has been getting rave reviews and winning awards at film festivals. Fans are embracing this dark antihero character, played by Dr. Phil himself, and featuring his SFX work and creatures. Due for DVD release in October 2011, Renfield is sure to make a big bloody splash!
